In other words, once that cruise ship leave port any possible income that could have come from that cabin, on that sailing, is lost forever. YES, perhaps income is made on the next sailing, but the opportunity to earn income on that sailing is gone forever.

Holland America Cruise Lines has initiated a program of up-scaling their cruise ships, cruise line image and passenger cruise experience. This initiative is called the Signature of Excellence program and will soon be experienced by cruise passengers on all Holland America cruises.

The award winning Holland America five star fleet of cruise ships will all have the unparalleled enhancements by the end of 2006. Included in the program are enhancements to the impeccable service Holland America guests have become accustomed to as well.

Premium cruising aboard Holland America's fleet will be enhanced by state-of-the-art facilities and public areas. Included are stateroom amenities, luxury beds and bed linens. All Holland America cruise ships will include the Neptune Lounge, Pinnacle Grill, Explorations Caf, the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, and a Culinary Arts Center.

Changes will be made for children and teens cruising with Holland America as well. The program includes newly expanded youth facilities with the Club HAL program. For teens, Holland America has included The Loft and The Oasis.

To date, Holland America has completed the program on six of their premium cruise ships - Prinsendam, Rotterdam, Ryndam, Statendam, Westerdam, and Zaandam. Holland America's cruise ship Amsterdam is due to have the program implemented by early October 2005. Volendam will see her program initiated in mid December 2005. HAL's Zuiderdam will see her program implemented in time for her holiday Caribbean cruise at the end of December 2005. Coming to Southeast Alaska this upcoming summer. If you fancy the taste of succulent crab and want to experience the adventure of catching some, then consider an excursion in Ketchikan. Ketchikan is the gateway to Alaska and is located on the Inside Passage. Ketchikan is an island located on Rivellagegedo and only accessible by air and sea. Ketchikan is also part of the Tongass National Rainforest. We get lots of rain! Just visit the rain gauge located downtown if you stop by for a visit. If your taking a cruise ship then this will be your first stop in Alaska.

Dungeness crabbing is a treat indeed. Its an opportunity to get out on the water, sightsee, and experience what catching crab is all about. Granted, this is not like the Deadliest Catch you may have seen on Discovery. There are several locations that are within range that allow cruise ship passengers to take advantage if they choose. A fourty five minute ride to Bostwick Inlet is a popular fishing spot. It is protected from the weather for the most part. Upon arrival you can bait your crab pots. I usually use herring and a carcass from salmon, halibut, or a codfish. Crab can be caught in as little as half an hour. You can only be keep the males as it is illegal to keep females. The males have to be 6 1/2 inches across the carapace in order to harvest. Males molt during the summer and fall months. Dungeness crab harvested at times of molting have a softer shell and the meat doesn't quite fill the shell. Some find it easier to pick the meat out of the shell and others complain that there is not enough meat in the shell. You'll have to decide for yourself if you come across one.

Cooking the crab is quite easy. Some people add Old Bay or Johnny's and some prefer adding their favorite beer. Once the water starts to boil I usually let it do so for about 10 minutes and call it good. Eat and enjoy, the fresher the better.

Some years ago my wife and I decided to take a cruise. We headed for Southampton to join our cruise ship, weighed down with luggage. (Why do women take twice as much as men?) Not knowing what to expect, we arrived at the terminal whereupon our cases were taken from us and firmly assured that they would be sent to our cabin. We checked in with one of the many assistants, boarded the ship and that would be it.

As this was our first cruise, we had been advised to choose an outside cabin which had natural light coming through the 2 portholes in our cabin. (See inside or outside). Once we boarded, we were escorted to our cabin by one of the many cabin stewards. Our luggage had not yet arrived so we decided to wander around the ship to get our bearings. This is always well worth doing as this also helps to get a feeling for the ship and its luxurious surroundings. We had also been advised that we would have to attend a lifeboat drill just after departure that was mandatory.

We wandered back to our cabin to find our luggage had arrived and proceeded to unpack. Yet again my wife managed to take most of the wardrobe space, although space in cabins has increased significantly since our first cruise. The cabin also had a TV, and private facilities that were more than adequate.

The ships alarm sounded and we made our way with life jacket to our muster station, generally shown on the rear of your cabin door. Once finished, we could sit back and totally relax.

The ship had lots to offer with two swimming pools, a casino with Black Jack and Roulette, a card room, show lounge which also doubled up to give advice on forthcoming ports of call and the excursions available, plus a well stocked library.

A misconception of cruising is that it is solely for the elderly. This is far from the truth with many younger couples and even families on board. There are also clubs and meetings for single travelers.

Our first port of call was La Corunna and we arrived one and a half days after departure. We arrived early in the morning which gave us the whole day to explore the Atlantic City. Others had taken the full or half day excursion that are bookable on board. (Prices vary according to content but as a guide 25 for a half day and 45 for a full day excursion.) Our cruise took us on to a number of ports including Lisbon, Cadiz, Casablanca, Tenerife and Madeira.

Once you have decided on your excursions try and book these as early as possible as many are on a limited basis and it is easy to miss out on the best excursions.

Food on board is a major plus and what you would expect from a floating hotel. Breakfast and lunch can either be taken in one of the ships main restaurants or in the open air around the outdoor swimming pool .On board our 3 star ship, the dress code alternated between, formal with dinner jackets and cocktail dresses to informal and casual, although no dress code is compulsory. (If you do not possess a dinner suit, these can be hired on board most ships, although a suit and tie will suffice in most cases.) The food is varied from vegetarian dishes to roast sirloin of beef, from sticky toffee pudding to passion fruit salad. The problem is, not knowing when to stop. If at the end of the day you are still hungry, you can always participate in the midnight buffet, before you wake up and it starts all over again. There was also a range of good wines to suit all tastes, and all drinks are very reasonably priced. (The house red was of a high standard and very good value.)

Life on board is so relaxed and you can either join in all the activity or sit back and watch the world go by. Information came via a daily bulletin with a full timetable of events, weather forecasts and special offers in the many shops on board.

The captain and officers are regularly seen throughout the ship and this commences early in the cruise with The Captains welcome cocktail party. This generally happens on the first formal night where you are introduced to the captain, and have the pleasure of having your photo taken with him. This ceremony happens again all too soon at the captains farewell party. (If you are lucky you may be invited to dine with the captain one evening.)

Our cruise holiday had gone all too soon when we pulled back in to Southampton. The previous 14 days had been the perfect antidote to the dull grey weather of Good Old England. Some of the passengers on our 14 day adventure became friends who to this day remain in touch. It is certainly a most wonderful way to relax and it transformed my life completely.

So, you have finally decided to treat yourself to a much-deserved cruise. Good! The question now is what to pack. What you pack depends slightly on which sort of cruise you are going on, but the basics remain the same, for the most part.

For instance, if you are taking a cruise up to Alaska, you may need to bring along a few extra, warmer pieces of clothing. It can get a little chilly when you are out walking on a glacier! And if you are going to be cruising through the Bahamas, for instance, you are going to want to be prepared for very warm (and maybe wet) weather.

Also, if you are going on a singles cruise... well, you are just going to want to make sure that you bring your cutest outfits! Make sure to bring an outfit for the bars or dancing, etc. Also, whereas most cruises do not require you to dress for dinner, some might (at least for one meal), so you may need to bring an evening gown or a tuxedo.

Of course, that being said, there are certain things that you are going to want to take, regardless of what sort of cruise you are on or where you are headed:

Sunscreen. You can never have enough sunscreen on a cruise! Think about it -- you are surrounded by water, and the sun wants nothing more than to burn you. You are going to tan and burn much faster than you would at home, so be prepared.
Passport! Many cruises stop at the ports of foreign countries. Make sure that you have the opportunity to explore them.
A camera. Make sure you catch all of the special moments.
Chapstick with an SPF of at least 15
Sunglasses
Sun hat
Prescriptions!
Swimsuit (you likely will want more than one!)
Swimsuit cover-up (so you can go straight from the pool to the bar)
Copies of your tickets
Credit card
Extra batteries (for camera, music player, etc.)Shorts (at least one pair)
T-shirts
Tank tops
Pants
At least one long-sleeve top
A sweater or jacket
Pajamas
A book (or crossword puzzle, etc.)
Dramamine, or another seasickness pill!
Sandals
Walking shoes
Socks
Underwear (bring at least one or two extra pairs)
Do not forget your toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, contact solution, razors, etc. Of course, if you do, it will be easy to find them at a shop on the cruise (but probably for a higher price)

Of course, the list of items to bring will vary from person to person. This list is just meant to get you thinking of items that you may want. Also, the amounts of clothes, etc. that you bring varies greatly depending on how long your cruise is. And if you happen to forget anything, you are likely going to be able to find it somewhere on the ship!
